DAY THREE
After finishing the table top it was time for us to work on the legs.
The children measured, marked…
and cut the four legs.
The next group cut the long rails that were supposed to hold the seats.
Before the lunch break four children painted the legs and the rails.
After lunch the donkeys assembled the two seats from two long boards and three short rails for each side.
Nice seat!
Then we put the two pairs of legs together, using two boards for the legs two for the lower rails and two for the upper rails.
The children got better and better at hammering the nails into the wood. At this stage even two children could hammer together on the same piece.
The Donkeys finished the first set of legs quickly.
Then we assembled the second set of legs.
The donkeys had a hammering competition who would hammer in the nail first.
At the end of the day the children cut the diagonals to strengthen the construction.
DAY FOUR
We started the next day with cutting off the overlaps of the legs.
For this we used a handsaw.
Even though the children had never used such a saw before they managed very well.
Our sets of legs were ready to be connected to the table top.
For that we used nails again.
First we connected the upper rails to the table top.
Then we added the diagonals…
…to provide extra support for the legs.
Then we added the seats…
…and nailed them on the lower rails.
For the last step we put rubber pads underneath the legs…
…like shoes that protect the wood from moisture.
Done!
What a beauty!!!
Donkeys, you did a wonderful job!
