DAY SEVEN
While some children still worked on the trunks, others started to assemble the finished parts of the table top.
We connected the first big trunk with a rail by drilling thick 12mm holes and by using wooden dowels.
We used a mallet to hammer in the dowels.
But before that we put some glue into the hole…
… and put glue on the dowel.
Each trunk was connected with two dowels to the rail.
The dowels we had to cut from a long round stick.
Meanwhile the children had finished the fifth trunk and we connected it to the rail like the other ones.
The Turtles had already learned how to measure and cut the dowels by themselves.
While some children started connecting the second rail, others worked on the corners of the trunks.
After some time the children had assembled the whole table top.
DAY EIGHT
After the glue for the dowels had dried over night, we started connecting the legs to the table top.
We hammered 75mm steel nails through the upper rail into the logs of the table top.
Then we fastened the diagonals…
…between the legs and the central log.
After that the whole construction was already quite strong.
But we still had to nail the legs to the other rail that connects the table top.
For that work some of the children had to stand on a bench while hammering.
The table was getting more and more solid.
To be even more on the safe side, we added another rail between the two sets of legs…
… as additional enforcement.
Meanwhile the children were hammering rubber pads cut from old car tires to the bottom of the legs…
… to protect the wood from moisture from the ground.
Finally all the parts of the table were assembled.
We still had to sandpaper the table top some more…
… and even though the sandpapering was starting to annoy the children, most of them still had fun doing it
This group of children carried the super heavy table out and put it in front of their classroom.
Before we could start painting it…
with a mixture of linseed oil, thinners and wood stain…
All Turtles came out of the classroom to admire their work…
… and we took some group photos.
Turtles, you honestly did a great job. Your table is wonderful!!!
