DAY SIX
We started the second week of our project with working on the diagonals that we had already cut with the circular saw. We carefully took off the bark with chisels and raspers and sandpapered them. After that we connected them with steel nails between the seat and the legs.
Then it was time to prepare the poles of the backrest. The children measured the parts on the drawing to get the correct sizes.
Again we used the circular saw to cut the pieces to the right size,…
…chiseled off the bark,…
…and made the poles smooth.
We used three steel nails to connect the poles to the legs…
… and used an additional dowel between each pole and the upper rail of the legs.
Since the poles were still a bit too long, we cut off the overlap with a handsaw.
Then we connected the upper rail of the backrest.
We used two steel nails and a dowel on each side.
After that we added the lower rail to the backrest.
DAY SEVEN
The last parts to add to our chair were the armrests. We prepared the parts with the circular saw, the chisels and the sandpaper.
Then we cut a corner in each end of the lower rail of the backrest. That is were we connected the armrest to the backrest.
The children already knew were to put the parts before we connected them.
We drilled 10mm holes and put in some glue.
We hammered the dowels into the holes.
We used nails to connect the armrest with the seat…
… and with the backrest.
After that we cut off the overlapping backrest with the handsaw.
Since we almost had connected all the parts of the armchair we presented our work to Miss Lydia, the teacher of Class 4. She seemed to like it and wanted it to be her chair.
The last parts to add were the rubber pads underneath the feet to protect the wood from moisture and mud. We cut four pads from an old tire that had no wires inside.
Even before the last sandpapering and before painting it the chair looked very nice.
At the end of the day the feet of the chair were put into oil overnight to preserve the part that will be the most exposed to moisture.
DAY EIGHT
Then we could finally give our chair a last finish with sandpaper.
We nailed the rubber pads under the feet.
Corrected the length of one leg that was a little too long with the rasper,…
… painted the chair with linseed oil and there it was our wonderful armchair!!!
You did a great job Monkeys!!!
